Where in the World is John Heilpern?
Listen up, gumshoes!
Today marks the the fourth straight week without a John Heilpern column in the New York Observer. What’s up?
An e-mail to the Observer has gone unanswered, and a few Internet searches have turned up no explanations.
Is Heilpern on vacation? Fired? Comatose? Deported?
Heilpern is my favorite theatre critic by far. His columns are a joy to read. Even his unfavorable reviews are never mean-spirited; unsuccessful shows are sent on their way with cheerfully bemused encouragement. I never care if I agree or disagree with his opinions; I just enjoy absorbing them.
So what’s the word on the street? If anyone has inside information on our dear critic’s whereabouts, please pass them along.

I’ve been wondering that myself: Where Is John Heilpern? (And yeah, I agree: he’s a pretty savvy, smart guy.)

Thanks for your concern. I’ve been on leave for six months finishing a book. I’ll be returning to the paper this coming week, which is like a man rowing back to the Titanic…
Bestest wishes,
John Heilpern
