The Tony Award for best Regional Theatre this year is going to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, a theatre which this season will be performing Plaid Tidings, the Christmas version of Forever Plaid. Is Forever Plaid really the way we want to honor the memory of Antoinette Perry?
Well, at least they’re not giving any awards or nominations to clockwork Ken Ludwig for whatever he did to Ben Hecht with Twentieth Century. Of course, Mr. Ludwig already got nominated for his offenses against Verdi and the Gershwins: Lend Me a Tenor and Crazy for You.
How can the American Theatre Wing honor the soulless, mechanical farce of Ludwig and the tepid musicality of… whoever wrote Forever Plaid and not recognize the gold standard of community theatre fare: Nunsense?!
But just search the Tony website for Nunsense and what do you find? Nothing. No nominations or awards for Dan Goggin’s endearing creation. How can this be possible?
Nunsense and its progeny—Nunsense II: The Second Coming, Nunsense Jamboree, Nuncrackers, Nunsense A-Men, Meshuggah-nuns, and Gimme Altar: Nuns at Altamont—all deserve better treatment from the Theatre Wing. When the awards roll around next year, we’d better see some love shown Dan Goggin’s way.
NO NUNSENSE NO PEACE!
