In my quest for wacky character names, things don’t always go the way I want them to.
For reasons unknown, it recently popped into my head that the real first name of Pope John Paul II is “Karol”. And I was thinking that naming a female character in something I write “Carol Whoever” would be a sly joke that few would get. But at least I’d laugh.
So I look up on the Internet and find that the Pope was born with the name “Karol Jozef Wojtyla” Yikes. If you name an American character “Carol Wojtyla,” people will know there’s something behind it, and that takes all the fun out of making it an inside joke!
So I’m thinking if I can still use His Holiness as a gag. Maybe I could take his middle name and create a “Carol Josephs,” but that’s not very challenging or rewarding. Wojtyla is pronounced “Voy-tee-wah”, so maybe I can come up with a Romanization to make it work. (But how do you Romanize the head of the Roman Catholic Church? Oh wait, you just call him “John Paul II”….)
Besides this name business, after the Irish wake in The Marley Show, the sleazy possibly-Catholic priest in The Bill Show, and Satan herself in I Am The Devil, is there a recurring religious motif in my work?
No. The church is just an easy target, and I’m a lazy hack writer! Woo Hoo!
